The concept of this practice eye surgery (wet lab) device was originated by Alan Mandell, MD in Memphis, Tennessee. He made the original units out of a wooden box with the same basic components using a syringe to pull a vacuum on the whole globe, with a simple clamp to maintain the vacuum at the level the surgeon desires in terms of globe firmness.
This simple system eliminates the need for styrofoam heads and stick pins, allows for a firm globe without the need for injections (at least normally) to the vitreous, and is easy to clean. Additionally, eyes can be used with minimal preparation, and works well either for porcine or cadaver globes.
