Years of cataract surgery experience has led to many discoveries. High volume surgeons tend to have their nurses fold the IOL's and hand the insertion device to the doctor ready to place in the eye. If any mistake is made during loading the lens, damage can and does occur. This is one of the most frequent complications in modern phaco surgery.
Robert 'Gale' Martin, MD, indicated that the nurses needed some form of magnification on their mayo stand or back table to ensure accurate and safe loading. The difficulty has been in making a device that is functional, relatively inexpensive and able to take the rigors of the operating room and autoclave cycles.
