The original globe fixation rings were designed by Spencer Thornton, MD and were manufactured by Storz for him. They were 16mm in diameter, were rigid and were a complete circle to provide maximum fixation. These were used for both radial and astigmatic keratotomy procedures, which Dr. Thornton pioneered in many regards.
The first swivel fixation rings were designed by Robert Hoffmann, MD and were produced by Katena for him. Numerous variations on these fixation rings have occurred over the course of time.
